Handicap Shower Chair
The area which can be considered as the most high-risk in
the house is none other than the bathroom. This can be very
true if there is any member in your family whom has mobility
challenge or in the old age. The bathroom with its slippery
tile, hard ceramic surfaces and wet floors are common things
that pose the risk of falling down. For younger and normal
person, this might not be a major problem (although the
risk of slipping and falling down is still there) but how
about the people that have movement limitation? Can they handle
such bathroom without the risk of injuring themselves?
One of the best ways to prevent unwanted thing from
happening while in the bathroom is using a handicap shower
chair. The shower is always surrounded by water and for
disabled people to stand while taking a bath increases the
chances of getting hurt; he or she can slip and fall down
easily and that’s why it is helpful if they can be in a sitting
position when showering.
Handicapped shower chair is specially designed to provide
the comfort and safety to disabled and aged person when taking
bath. Unlike standing or using ordinary chair, this type of
seat doesn’t have slippery surface besides also being more
stable and sturdy.
There are many types of handicap shower seat which are
available in the market; teak shower seat, plastic shower
chair, aluminum shower seat, folding bath bench and etc. There
are people who prefer a seat that made of wood particular from
the teak variations and some other who prefer seat that made of
plastic or aluminum. This depends on the individual preferences
and need. Teak shower seats look more elegant and comfortable;
however, due to constant exposure to water and moisture, black
fungi might develop in the long run. Teak is considered to be
one of the finest woods in the world but that doesn’t mean that
it won’t tear and wear out, only that it might take longer
before it starts to deteriorate.
Besides the difference material used, handicap shower seat
also available in wheeled and non-wheeled types. The wheeled
type is suitable for person who can hardly stand and needed a
lot of assistance getting in and out of the shower. Wheel
shower chair is not only perfect for such case as it also
provides the opportunity for them to be independent and thus,
gaining back their self confidence.
There are some people who might not prefer having a shower
bench or seat in their bathroom, this is particular true if the
shower is not spacious. So instead of getting a normal shower
seat, they might opt for a mounted shower seat. Mounted shower
seat is more convenient in term of storing as the seat can be
lifted up when not being used; this could save a lot of space
for a small bathroom. Usually, the seat will be mounted at the
corner of the bath or near the shower. To enhance the safety,
it is also advisable that a shower grab bar is installed to
assist the user to getting up and down the seat.
One thing about mounted handicap shower seat is it is more
suitable for people who are not completely immobilized, in
other words, they still can move around with the assistance of
a walking stick. So for people who can’t stand up without the
assistance from other, a wheel shower chair would be the best
choice.
